What Is Depression?
Depression is a mood disorder where a person no longer finds enjoyment in the things they once did. They are consistently having feelings of sadness and you are unable to function as you once did. The good news is that depression is treatable.
Factors That May Play A Role If You Are Experiencing Depression
- Biochemistry and Brain Structure:
- Certain chemicals in the brain may contribute to symptoms of depression
- A less active frontal lobe may also be a factor in developing depression
- Genetics:
- You are more likely to experience depression if someone in your family has been diagnosed with depression.
- Medical conditions such as chronic illness
- Environmental factors such as, exposure to violence, poverty or continued neglect or abuse.
- Early childhood trauma
- Generational trauma
- A recent life change or traumatic experience
What Are Symptoms Of Depression?
- Feeling sad or having a depressed mood
- Loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed
- Significant weight loss or gain
- Sleep changes
- Slowed thinking
- Loss of energy or increased fatigue
- Feeling worthless or guilty
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- Thoughts of death or suicide
The Different Types Of Depression
Major Depressive Disorder
This is when there are feelings of hopelessness, sadness and fear and are significantly effecting your day to say life. Symptoms described above need to be present consistently for 2 weeks or more.
There are different types of Major Depressive Disorder
Persistent Depressive Disorder
This is a milder chronic form of depression and to be diagnosed must be present for at least 2 years.
