What to Expect
In the first few sessions expect for the therapist to get to know you and what brought you to therapy. In these sessions the therapist will actively listen and take notes to create more structured sessions according to your needs. It is common for people to have strong emotions during sessions. Therapy is the most beneficial when you are investing your time and energy to make the changes and work through your emotions. Expect for your therapist to guide and support you through the process in a safe non-judgmental way.
In the first session we will discuss what brought you to therapy and discuss the plan moving forward. This will include how often you would like to come in, how long you expect to attend therapy, and what you expect for your next session.
As sessions continue you will notice that a lot of the work will happen on your own time in lived experiences. It is a good idea to come to therapy with questions or things that may have come up between sessions. Therapy is meant to be empowering and help you process distressing events/memories but also give you the strategies and tools to move towards your goals of therapy. Don’t be afraid to tell your therapist if something isn’t working for you. The most important goal for a therapist is to help you through what brought you there. Be patient with the process and be curious.
